ARTWORK DESCRIPTION

My Name is Muhammad was inspired by one of the most celebrated photographs in sports history: Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston, who had just been knocked down during the first round of their second fight.

The fight took place on May 25, 1965, at the Central Maine Youth Center in Lewiston, Maine, United States. The photograph captured Ali’s power, confidence, and theatrical presence at a pivotal moment in sports history.

The title is not a quotation referring to that precise moment. Instead, it evokes the assertion of the new identity chosen by the boxer after abandoning the name Cassius Clay: Muhammad Ali. A personal declaration that also became a public demand for respect and recognition.

I transformed the scene into a monumental mixed-media artwork, contrasting the painted background with figures constructed from plastics, discarded objects, and reclaimed materials.
