ARTWORK DESCRIPTION
Black Jug and Skull is my reinterpretation of the lithograph of the same name created by Pablo Picasso in 1946.
In the original work, the jug, book, and skull evoke the tradition of vanitas: temporary pleasure, pride associated with knowledge, and awareness of death. I reconstructed these elements by assembling salvaged household objects, metal food packaging, and other discarded materials.
Viewed from a distance, the composition retains the graphic immediacy of Picasso’s image. As the viewer approaches, the forms fragment and reveal the individual objects from which they are made, together with their original surfaces, imperfections, and functions.
The transition from a two-dimensional lithograph to a mixed-media relief transforms the still life into a physical presence constructed from materials diverted from waste.
